Hi All. I work internationally in the fields of HIV, public health and communication with a primary interest in community development and social mobilisation through participatory engagement. The focus of my work includes the programme design, community and social mobilisation, evaluation of health interventions, and development of national and subnational policies and strategies that include a communication orientation. My research work includes prevention of gender-based violence (GBV); gender and health; HIV prevention; addressing HIV among vulnerable groups and key populations and the needs and responses of people living with HIV (PLHIV). Action Media was developed in the early 1990s to address concerns about integration of community perspectives and voices in HIV communication, and it has since been used widely to inform a range of health and social issues. I've also developed and managed various communication interventions including leading South Africa's Beyond Awareness Campaign, the conceptualisation, development and evaluation of the award winning AIDS focused prime-time youth drama series, Tsha Tsha, and collaborating in the development and implementation of a gender-based violence social mobilisation programme in South Africa – Prevention in Action. I co-founded the Centre for AIDS Development, Research and Evaluation (CADRE) in South Africa in 2000, and served as Executive Director until early 2009. My post-graduate studies have focused on social and critical perspectives on the sociology of health.
